Illawarra
The Illawarra region is located on the south coast of New South Wales, approximately 80 kilometres south of Sydney. The area is largely coastal, stretching from Helensburgh and Stanwell Tops in the north to Gerroa in the south. The meaning of the word Illawarra - “Between the mountains and the sea” - is very apt indeed as the region is unique in Australia for the proximity of the escarpment to the ocean. Nowhere is this more dramatically displayed than in the north of the region, where the famous Sea Cliff bridge was built because the road that hugged the cliff line was so dangerous.
In the south of the region around Kiama, the narrow coastal fringe is lush dairy-farming country, seemingly forever green, and sandwiched spectacularly between escarpment and ocean.
Many a happy holiday has been spent swimming and surfing at the magnificent beaches along this striking section of our coastline.
Sue Kendrick grew up in Wollongong and her abiding fascination with the region is evidenced in her photographs.
